Caught in a six-day tempest, a Swiss family watches their ship founder and their crew row away without them. Through the night, father and eldest son Fritz improvise a desperate plan to reach land.
Landfall
At break of day the family rows the tub-raft to shore, making landfall on an unknown tropical island. They set up camp, find food, and discover that the island — wild and threatening — is also full of life.
First Explorations
Father and Fritz cross the river to search for the lost crew — and instead discover sugar-cane, the gourd-tree, and the island's extraordinary abundance. By the time they turn for home, they are certain the sailors are gone.
The Monkey
Returning from their expedition, father and Fritz bring back gourds, sugar-cane, and cocoa-nuts — and an unexpected new companion: an orphaned baby monkey adopted by Fritz after Turk kills its mother.
The Jackal Night
Father and Fritz make a second voyage to the wrecked ship, load the tub-raft with salvaged provisions, and return — but before they do, Fritz adds a sail that will change everything.
Swimming the Cattle
Father and Fritz rig swimming-girdles for the livestock and float them all to shore — until a shark attacks the swimming sheep and Fritz fires the shots that save them.
The Great Tree
Elizabeth tells how she led the younger boys across the river while father and Fritz were away — and discovered a grove of gigantic fig trees where the family might sleep beyond the reach of every enemy.
The Bridge
The family plans their move to the great tree and builds a ten-foot-wide bridge across the river — engineering their passage to the Land of Promise.
The March to Falconhurst
The family breaks camp and marches in full caravan to the great fig tree — animals, poultry, and all — where Fritz shoots a tiger-cat lurking at the roots before the family has even unpacked.
Into the Branches
Father makes a bow and shoots a cord over the lowest branch; the rope ladder goes up; Jack and Fritz ascend — and from the canopy sing the evening hymn as the island darkens below them.
